FAQs and Information

Dear Visitor,

For certain events, pictures are available as jpg files on disc. Here are the details.

  • How can I tell for which events a disc of pictures is available?

If a CD option is listen in the shopping basket page then a disc is available; if not listed, then electronic copies are not available for that event.
  • Which pictures can I order on a disc?

You can have any pictures (from that event) of a single dancer and their partner(s), up to a limit of 100 pictures total.
  • How do I tell you which pictures to put on my disc?

You can use the collection feature of this website to select the pictures. Click on the link top-right to start a new collection, choose a name and use the elephant button underneath the thumbnail picture. Then when you place the order, put the name of the collection that you chose in the "Additional Information" box on the order page. Alternatively, you can just email me a list of the image numbers after placing your order. Remember all the pictures on a single disc must be of a single dancer or the partner they're dancing with at the time. And there's a limit of 100 pictures per disc.
  • What can I do with the pictures when I get them?

You can print them, email them, send them to friends and post them on websites. You can print up to 5,000 of each picture. You can use them in brochures and adverts which promote your own business or dance. You can provide them for use in editorial articles in local and regional press, but not national or international publications. If you want to print more that 5,000 copies or have any of them published in nationally-distributed press, you must contact me first. You can't use the images commercially except as specified above. You can't charge money or receive valuable consideration for their use. If you're not sure if your intended use is permitted, please check with me first.
  • What about copyright?

The copyright in all the pictures remains mine; I'm providing you with a licence to use the images in certain ways (see above.) If you or anyone uses the images in ways not permitted above then you (or they) will be in breach of the copyright.
  • What about social networking websites like Facebook?

Organisations like Facebook have as part of their terms and conditions that any pictures you post there (broadly speaking) become their property to use as they wish. Such websites forbid you from posting images to which you don't have those rights to give them. Since I do not permit you those rights nor allow you to give those rights away, you're forbidden by the terms of use of those websites from posting any images from Danceportraits on such sites. If you post them anyway then you will be responsible to the website for your breach of their conditions as well as to me for any potential breach of copyright that results.
  • What size are the pictures? What will the quality be like?

The pictures will be provided in two sizes - 600 pixels (like the ones on the website, but without the watermarks) for web display, and at least 1800 pixels for printing. The quality of any image depends on a lot of factors like the venue, lighting etc. so I can't guarantee that any particular image will be good enough at full size for any special purpose you have in mind.
  • The pictures are too light (too dark) - what can you tell me about colour profiles?

I edit and adjust all the pictures on a correctly profiled display system, and the jpgs are produces with an sRGB profile. Within limits, every picture is individually adjusted to look "right" to me, under those conditions. If all the pictures are either much too dark or too light it's likely that your system is not calibrated properly (or at all) the solution to which lies outside my control.
  • If I don't like the pictures, can I have a refund?

Unfortunately not. Refunds are available for prints, but not for discs. If you have a specific purpose for an individual picture you're welcome to contact me for specific guidance before purchasing.
  • Can I have the pictures emailed instead? Can I buy just one image, rather than pay for a whole set?

No - electronic pictures are available only on disc, and only priced in sets. You can order as few or as many pictures as you want (up to a maximum of 100) but the price remains the same.
  • But we got knocked out in the first round and there are only two pictures of us, and in one of those he's pulling a silly face, and I really want just one picture to make a get-well card for his granny who's very sick - so how much for just that one picture?

Aaargh! I sympathise, I really do, but ...

I hope that's useful to know. If there's anything I've missed out that you think should be here do let me know - contact details, as usual, via the contact link at the top right of every page.
